Equipping Active Citizens

Giving learners knowledge and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities through Citizenship Education.

LegalWise has embarked on an exciting Public/Private partnership to equip Grade 10, 11 & 12 learners with knowledge to become active citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities through Citizenship Education.

In collaboration with the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, LegalWise has developed a series of manuals that will be introduced into schools in five modules covering the following topics:

  • Constitutional Basics
  • Family Law
  • Law of the Workplace
  • Criminal Law
  • Financial Law

The legal material aligns with the Life Orientation curriculum and aims to prepare learners to become responsible citizens, with an in-depth understanding of the Constitution and the ability to make informed legal decisions for themselves and their families.

All content and activities have been developed to allow learners to engage with complex issues that are topical and which encourage healthy debate and personal reflection. The aim is to make the Constitution 'come alive' in their minds.

Teacher training workshops have been conducted in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga with 1120 Further Education and Training (FET) teachers being equipped on how to effectively bring the law into the classroom. The response to these resources from Life Orientation teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, with one teacher saying, “I have changed my perspective towards the subject of Life Orientation. This material is informative and meaningful to us.”

This project will impact the lives of an estimated 145 000 learners in 2018 with more teacher workshops planned for 2019. By bringing the Constitution into the classroom, we hope to equip learners with the ability to contribute to the positive transformation of their schools, families and communities.
