The dictionary defines the process of transformation as 'changing in character or condition'. Faced with the daily challenge of gangsterism, crime and substance abuse, transformation seems impossible for many of the youth in the communities on the Cape flats.

It is against this backdrop that The Message Trust established their Community Transformation Hubs in the communities of Nyanga and Parkwood with the support of LegalWise. Aimed at identifying at risk youth and providing them with a safe environment to engage in after school programmes, the Hubs offer life skills, mentoring, educational support, and fun-based youth activities including soccer training. Building on the philosophy of investing deeply in a focused group of youngsters to develop their potential, The Message team works closely with a select group of youth 5 days a week during school terms.

Let us introduce you to some of the young leaders who have shown the courage to choose a brighter future with the support of The Message Trust Community Transformation Hubs.

Ezekiel (13) is a young learner who, along with his friends was a regular user of marijuana (dagga) and even went so far as to sell dagga on the grounds of his high school when he was introduced to The Message Trust. After attending a drug awareness programme and hearing the transformational stories from some of The Message team members, Ezekiel became a regular visitor at the Parkwood Hub. Under the supervision of the Hub team, he now assists with the programme for the younger children and is committed to continuing his journey of transformation.

Katelyn's mother is an HIV positive drug addict who lives on the street, unable to care for 12-year-old Katelyn who often has to beg for a meal from neighbours. Having witnessed Katelyn being verbally ridiculed by her guardian, the Parkwood Hub team invited Katelyn to visit the centre. “Remembering the language Katelyn's guardian used showed me how much more we need to love the children that walk through our doors at the hub,” says Enrico Van der Poll, Community Transformation Manager at The Message Trust. When asked the question if she is happy that she has a safe place to go, Katelyn replied, “I am grateful that the Hub is open because it gives me a safe place; here we get something to eat and even juice to drink.”

The Hubs provide a place where young people have access to quality educational support, can excel in sports and have the opportunity to express themselves and be mentored.

The Message Hub model has the potential to realise the dream of seeing young people in communities like Nyanga and Parkwood radically transformed. As the principle partner of The Message Community Transformation programme, we are confident that we will reach more young people like Katelyn and Ezekiel, raising up young leaders of the future.
